Forestry Tasmania proposed an AUD6 million ecotourism development with the intent of highlighting the heritage of forestry and saw milling in the area along with showcasing the forestry landscapes from the summit of the Maydena Range.

Lying in the shadows of both the Tyenna and Maydena Mountain Ranges in the Florentine Valley, TAS, Maydena was once home to timber mills and mines before large fires and the end of the mining era drove residents eastwards.
It was proposed that visitors be able to travel to the height of 1100 meters from the valley floor via two separate modes of transport, including a vehicular route which encompassed a bridge and interpretive walk and the second being the Hauler route. Atop the Maydena range, visitors could enjoy 360 degree views of the Styx Valley and both the east coast and southwestern World Heritage areas. The complex was also planned to have a full range of associated services such as water, power, waste management and fire safety.
COVA were engaged to project manage all aspects of the development including the environmental approvals process. From undertaking a number of priority tasks to preparing and coordinating all approval documentation and liaising with local, state and federal governments, COVA were invaluable in undertaking all planning requirements for the project.
COVA also managed all aspects involved in the implementation of a community consultation program, selecting and managing sub-consultants and liaising with the engineering design team.
The development included establishing a visitors centre complete with a restaurant and car park, a working sawmill, an interpretive walk at Eagles Eyrie near the summit of Abbots Lookout and an observation deck in the Saddle Area.
