Christchurch Earthquake
Project scope
Following the Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, Christchurch entered a long period of recovery. Working with a major insurance provider, COVA undertook structural assessments of residential properties damaged beyond the cap for direct government funding and repairs, including multi-unit and multi-insured properties: groups of dwellings insured under different providers.
COVA's role was to assess total damage, determine whether each dwelling was best classed as a repair or a rebuild, and then lead the approvals process to restore homes to pre-earthquake condition, alongside the Earthquake Commission's large-scale testing to identify appropriate areas and structural designs.
COVA established an office in Christchurch with permanent civil and structural engineers on location, and valued the opportunity to contribute to the city's rebuild.
