Building on our recent workshop with Sarah Kolbenstetter from Little Green Spark, the Project Management team at COVA Cambodia is actively integrating more sustainable practices into our project lifecycles. A significant learning highlight was that construction waste often accounts for 10-30% of materials disposed of in global landfills and can contribute to nearly 30% of total project cost overruns. The training also emphasised that managing waste from construction and demolition (C&D) materials effectively requires moving up the “Waste Hierarchy”while prioritising prevention and reuse over simple disposal. By shifting our focus “upstream” to the design and planning phases, we learned that tools such as BIM and modular design can reduce waste at the source by up to 15-30% before construction even begins.

Our focus is on building a solid foundation for more sustainable operations. We are committed to exploring new strategies and gradually transforming these insights into actionable waste management practices. Our goal is to ensure that our projects become more resource-efficient while remaining aligned with local regulatory standards and community environmental goals.
