COVA was engaged to provide a complete solution: project feasibility, commercial management, project management, architecture and engineering, with COVA Cambodia’s project team leading the construction.

Heart disease — coronary artery disease in particular — is among the leading causes of death in Cambodia. The Heart Centre was established to meet that challenge, bringing cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment to the province as a public health facility under the provincial health administration.

Health infrastructure of this kind demands more than standard construction expertise. The facility’s modern Cathlab and precision-designed procedure rooms called for exacting technical requirements, high-quality materials and strict compliance with health infrastructure standards — the disciplines our Cambodia practice is built on.

COVA’s involvement began before the project was committed, with real estate due diligence on the greenfield site at Barangay Concepcion Grande. With the temple now moving into construction, COVA’s commission has grown: our team provides commercial management (quantity surveying) and project & construction management through to completion. The temple, announced in October 2022, will be a single-storey building of approximately 18,850 square feet on a 3.7-hectare site at the intersection of Almeda Highway and Almeda Avenue, with an ancillary building and a meetinghouse also planned. Elder Shumway described it as “a place of peace and sacredness, a place that will forever divide the light from the darkness of this world.”

It joins COVA’s growing programme of temple work across the Philippines and the wider region, including the Cagayan de Oro, Tacloban City and Tuguegarao City temples.

Announced on 7 October 2018, the temple broke ground on 18 September 2021. The completed building stands at 929 square metres on a 1.3-hectare site on Russian Confederation Boulevard, near the Royal University of Phnom Penh.

The project was delivered by COVA’s Phnom Penh team, whose quantity surveying practice is regulated by RICS. For a building of this significance to its community, the brief demanded exacting quality and a carefully managed programme — the disciplines our Cambodia practice has built its reputation on.

A public open house runs from 15 to 22 August 2026 (excluding Sunday 16 August), ahead of the dedication by Elder Patrick Kearon of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on 30 August at 10am.

The forum brought together leaders from business, government, and advocacy groups to discuss the importance of women’s leadership in driving inclusive economic growth and resilient organisations. Discussions highlighted that gender equality is both a fundamental human right and a key contributor to sustainable economic development.

Leila Rostom, Country Lead of COVA Cambodia, joined the panel discussion, sharing insights on the challenges faced by women in traditionally male-dominated industries and highlighting practical steps organisations can take to foster more inclusive workplaces.

A key milestone of the event was the official signing ceremony welcoming 16 new companies to the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) community, including COVA Cambodia. Developed by UN Women and the United Nations Global Compact, the WEPs provide a framework for businesses to advance gender equality across leadership, workplace policies, and community engagement.

Through this commitment, COVA Cambodia will continue to translate gender equality principles into measurable action - supporting women’s leadership, fostering safe and inclusive workplaces, and contributing to stronger, more equitable communities.

His approach centres on balancing design excellence with real-world application, ensuring that projects are not technically sound but also efficient, buildable and aligned with client-objectives.

Share a project that stands out as particularly memorable and rewarding. “One particularly memorable project involved stepping in to resolve the critical failure of mechanical systems on an operational site. We were engaged to deliver a complete end-to-end model and develop tailored, site-specific engineering solutions while challenging the client’s traditional operational and procurement approach.”

Through smart engineering, fast-tracked delivery, direct supplier engagement and close collaboration, the team delivered the project significantly under budget and six months ahead of schedule.

For him, the success demonstrated the power of trusted partnerships and commercially astute engineering thinking.

What keeps you coming back to construction after all these years?

That moment when the client walks in and says “WOW”. We spend months turning renderings into reality, and when a client sees their vision come to life exactly as they imagined, that’s everything and it never gets old.

The 80-day Challenge Benjamin’s proudest achievement came from a 1,900 m² renovation in one of the most challenging conditions imaginable.

The site was 25 kilometres from the nearest town, resources were scarce and the timeline was tight - just 80 days. And other contractors were skeptical.

” We had 80 days to complete a 1,900 m² renovation in a location so remote it was 25 km from the nearest town. Resources were limited. The team worked 14-hour days. We faced constant doubts and criticism from other contractors.

But we delivered on time. On handover day, every one of them gave us a thumbs up. That recognition meant a lot. ”

Benjamin’s approach to leadership is refreshingly straightforward: there is no universal approach. How do you lead teams on challenging projects? Different folks, different strokes. Some team members need hands-on guidance and support. Others are ready to step up if you give them the opportunity. There’s no universal playbook. You have to understand each person and adapt your leadership to help them succeed.

It’s a philosophy shaped by decades of managing diverse teams across multiple industries - from fast food chains and retail to education facilities and construction materials. In every sector, the challenge has been the same: bring out the best in people, regardless of their starting point.

What does Engineering Better Lives” mean in your day-to-day work?

It’s about showing up with full commitment every single day. Paying attention to detail, delivering quality work and ending each day with the satisfaction that we moved one step closer to fulfilling the vision of the client. Then recharging so we can show up again tomorrow with the same commitment and passion.

Beyond the build site When he is not managing a construction team, Benjamin enjoys the simple things: coffee, exercise, a clean house and a well-stocked fridge. But he also dedicates time to something entirely different.

What do you do when you’re not on-site?

Coffee. Exercise. Keeping the house clean and the fridge stocked. And I volunteer as a Chinese language teacher periodically at a non-profit university here in Cambodia - it’s another way to give back to the community.

Yiaga is a highly designed, intimate dining destination founded by celebrated chef Hugh Allen (also of Vue du Monde). The project involved transforming an existing historic single-storey building into a refined restaurant approximately 442 sqm, with a focus on strong connection between interior and landscape open kitchen and dining room integration, and high-end craft finishes.

COVA were engaged for full Mechanical, Electrical, Fire and Hydraulic services design and coordination for this project.

This collaboration aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world industry practice, nurturing the next generation of creative thinkers and industry leaders. Through mentorship and collaboration with COVA’s senior executives, students will gain valuable exposure to leadership, innovation and practical skills essential for success in a global environment.

This alliance signifies a shared commitment from both organisations, setting a new benchmark for innovative education and effective workforce preparation.

During the summit, Leila shared key insights on the future of the QS profession. The central message was clear, which is that the role of Quantity Surveyors must evolve from that of a traditional ‘measurer’ to a strategic commercial leader. To future-proof the profession, QS practitioners must lead with integrity, uphold high ethical standards, and enforce zero tolerance for unethical practices.

The presentation also highlighted the importance of sustainability and climate risk management in project costing. It emphasised the need for an education system that nurtures digitally proficient commercial leaders, blending technical engineering knowledge with deep contract law and procurement expertise.

This evolution, driven by diversity and empowered by the next generation of leaders, will position Quantity Surveyors as the Client’s ‘guardian of value’ championing responsible, innovative and sustainable project outcomes across the region.

1. Can you tell us about yourself and your role at COVA?

I am a Building Services Design Drafter, Electrical Designer, Lighting Designer, and Design manager, working across a variety of building services projects throughout Tasmania and interstate. I oversee the electrical discipline in most projects, coordinating designs from concept through to construction while mentoring junior engineers and supporting their development. My role covers everything from early design concepts and coordination to detailed documentation and site reviews. I use both AutoCAD and Revit to produce detailed documentation that ensures accuracy, constructability, and alignment with each project’s design intent and client expectations.

2. Share a project that stands out to you as particularly memorable or rewarding?

Two projects come to mind for very different reasons. The first is the Korongee Dementia Village in Hobart, which was especially meaningful as I had seen first-hand the challenges of a more traditional aged care facility when my grandfather was in care. Working on a purpose-built environment that breaks away from the old institutional model and focuses on dignity, independence, and quality of life was incredible rewarding.

Another standout is the Callington Mill Distillery. It was a technically detailed and visually stunning project to be part of, and being able to later visit my family for lunch and a tour gave them a real insight into what I do. It was a proud moment seeing our work come to life.

3. COVA’s project often involves close collaboration across disciplines, what do you enjoy most about working in a multi-disciplinary team?

I enjoy the collaboration and problem-solving that comes with working alongside different disciplines. Everyone brings a unique perspective, and it’s always satisfying when the team comes together inside COVA and other companies to delivery a well-coordinated outcome.

4. What’s been your proudest moment at COVA?

One of my proudest moments was completing the Kokoda Track as part of a fundraising initiative for R U OK?. It was a challenging personal goal, but it also reflected the values teamwork, resilience, and supporting mental health and wellbeing. Professionally, it’s equally rewarding to see projects progress from concept to completion and know the systems we’ve designed are performing exactly as intended.

5. What’s one career milestone you’re most proud of?

Reaching the ten-year mark at COVA has definitely been a standout milestone. It’s been great to grow alongside the company, contribute to so many different projects, and see how far both the business and our team have changed over the years. No official milestones yet but hitting ten years feels like a pretty good achievement in itself.

Experienced, adaptable, and reliable

7. Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I like the outdoors especially after spending a lot of work time inside behind a computer. So hiking, exploring Tasmania’s coastline, or working on renovation and design projects at home. I also enjoy spending time at our place at White Beach, where I can unwind and make the most of the coastal lifestyle.

Each new colleague brings valuable expertise and energy to the team, further strengthening COVA’s capabilities as the business continues to deliver exciting regional projects. Before the year’s end, the Vietnam office also celebrated a significant milestone with its first Monthly Award in September, presented to Nien Pham - an achievement proudly recognised across the wider COVA family.

September was an important month for the country as well, with Vietnam marking its 80th National Day of Independence, the largest national celebration in recent years. Although parts of the country have experienced heavy rain and flooding during the storm season, the Ho Chi Minh City office situated in the more temperate southern region remains safe.

Beyond project work, Vietnam continues to stand out for its vibrant culture, dynamic workforce, and rapidly growing economy. The country has become one of Asia’s emerging hubs for engineering, design, and technology, supported by a young and talented generation of professionals eager to learn and innovate. With its warm hospitality, diverse cuisine, and rich history, Vietnam provides a welcoming environment not only for local talent but also for international collaboration and growth.

Can you tell us a little about your background and the type of projects you’ve worked on? I grew up in Adelaide and studied Architecture at the University of Adelaide. Over the past 20 years, I’ve worked as a Project Architect in Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart, gaining broad experience across a range of project types. In Tasmania, my work focused mainly on multi-storey residential developments and educational projects in both the primary and tertiary sectors. A career highlight has been contributing to the delivery of The Hedbery in Hobart (Liminal Architecture with WOHA) - a landmark cultural and creative industries precinct that integrates creative studies at the University of Tasmania with Australia’s oldest working theatre, the Theatre Royal.

What’s one project you’re looking forward to delivering with COVA? I’m looking forward to delivering the Montpelier House project in Battery Point, Hobart, which comprises 21 luxury apartments designed by Fender Katsalidis. It’s a fantastic opportunity to bring a high-quality, design-led residential project to life in such a unique and historic part of the city.

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing? Outside of work, I enjoy spending as much time as I can with my family. One of my main passions is trail running, which allows me to combine fitness with a love of the landscape. I enjoy the challenge of pushing myself physically while experiencing Tasmania’s natural beauty. At the moment, I’m training for the Point to Pub, a local event that combines community spirit with endurance and adventure - something I find especially motivating.

Representing COVA Cambodia, Leila had the privilege of sharing how the company is actively championing gender and equality and empowering women within the construction industry. She highlighted over COVA’s commitment extends beyond policy to encompass actionable initiatives, including dedicated training and mentoring programs. These programs are designed to equip our employees with the skills and confidence necessary for career advancement, while specifically supporting the professional development of women in a traditionally male-dominated sector.

During the workshop, COVA reaffirmed its commitment to embedding the WEPs into its daily operations and corporate values. This includes fostering a culture of continuous learning and mutual respect. Our strategic focus on training and mentoring aims to help both men and women achieve a healthy work-life balance, enabling them to pursue their professional goals and care for their families without compromise.

This investment in human capital is a key business imperative that fuels innovation, strengthens our community impact and positions COVA Cambodia as a leader in creating a more equitable and inclusive workforce. We look forward to continuing this work and building a future where every individual is empowered to thrive.

Key topics included strategies for embracing change, building resilience, and navigating today’s complex business environment. The workshop concluded with team reflections and an opportunity to connect over an evening of food and drinks.

Built in 1844, the historic and iconic Customs House is a Commonwealth and NSW heritage-listed landmark, museum space, commercial office and visitor attraction, located at 45 Alfred Street, Circular Quay.

AVC initially engaged COVA to perform a site audit to determine what was possible, given the site was left dormant since the COVID period in 2020.

The COVA team performed an excellent investigation and confirmed that the AVC vision was indeed possible.

Currently, the design is at the concept stage to support the upgrade of a commercial kitchen, 2 x mobile external bar areas, restaurant, Back-of-House, and cold storage facilities.

The team have particularly excelled in providing AVC support through the heritage coordination process, offering innovative design to avoid heritage impact, additional cost and delays.

Originally scheduled for September, the journey was postponed, but in May this year, Tim finally set foot on the historic track. His determination not only paid off on the trail, but in raising an incredible $3,710 for R U Ok?

Port Moresby to Deniki

Day 1

We woke at 3 am and took a bus to the Port Moresby domestic airport for a short flight to Kokoda. From there, we endured a slow and bumpy 3-hour truck ride to the start of the track.

Here we met our guides, cooks, historians and porters. We carefully repacked our bags, mindful of every gram. Most of us had definitely overpacked but not much we could do about it now.

After lunch, it was time to set off, ready or not. The first day involved a 4-5 hour hike straight into a steep climb to our first camp at Deniki, located at 900 metres above sea level.

We were all a bit shocked of how hard the first day was expecting to ease into it.

Deniki - Isurava Village - Alola

Day 2

Our first full day of trekking began with a 4am wake up to pack up tents and eat breakfast, hitting the track by 6am.

We stopped at Isurava Village, a peaceful place and memorial site built by the Australian government. We spent time learning about the famous Battle of Isurava and reflected on what the troops endured here.

After lunch we continued up into the mountains reaching the village of Alola (1,400m above sea level) where we spent the night. After today we felt like we had really made good dent into our journey.

Day 3

Same 4 am routine.

The trek to Templeton’s Crossing took us through lush rainforest and our first serious river crossing (the start of many). After lunch at Templeton’s Crossing, we climbed again to our campsite at Eora Creek. The temperature dropped noticeably. A welcome change from the heat as we trekked higher along the ridge.

Day 4

Another early 4am start.

This morning we rise for a tough day of trekking as we climb to 2200m, the highest point of the trail known as Mount Bellamy. We had to stay close to our porter while navigating the ascent. We got some spectacular views across the Owen Stanley Ranges and then descend a few hundred metres to Digger’s Camp.

Day 5

Rise and shine again at 4am.

Today we trekked toward the northern face of Mt Bellamy, with views of Naduri, Kagi, Brigade Hill, and Nauro. A 2-hour descent brought us to EfogiI. Passing through open grassland and slippery trails, with a break at Naduri. The standout section of this day was a near-vertical climb up a waterfall. It absolutely floored me - I threw up as I reached the stop. Little did I know, this was just the beginning of a rough patch.

This was when I was hit with a jungle parasite, which kept me glued to the drop toilet most of the night.

Efogi I -Brigade Hill - Menari

Day 6

This was one of the most challenging days for me. It’s often considered one of the hardest days of the trek and being up all night sick, unable to hold down food or much water, didn’t help.

We set off even earlier and followed the path taken by retreating Australian solders. Our first climb took us to Mission Ridge, where we looked back over Efogi I and II.

We continued along the ridge to Brigade Hill, learning more about the area’s wartime history.

The descent down Mission Ridge to Menari was steep and very slippery. After lunch, we climbed steeply for 1.5 hours to the top of Menari Ridge. We were told we’d “broken the back” of the Kokoda Track. We then descended into the Nauro Valley and crossed the Brown River to reach camp.

Once we arrived, I basically collapsed onto the grass until dinner. I couldn’t eat much, and during dinner I started feeling really unwell and distorted hearing set in. Likely from dehydration, low blood sugar, and exhaustion.

Thankfully, I had a much better sleep that night and thought I was through the worst of it… or so I thought!

Menari - Ioribaiwa - Uaule Creek

Day 7

We kicked off the day with the Nine False Peaks - 3 hours of serious uphill trekking to the top of the Maguli Range (1,350m). I was starting to feel better and managed to eat a little breakfast.

From the ridge, we began a long descent, taking a break at Jap’s Ladder. At Ioribaiwa, we paused where Australian troops first heard that the war had ended.

From there, we descended a steep slope to Uaele Creek. At the base of Ioribaiwa Ridge, we crossed nine creeks and rivers before reaching our final camp for the night.

Day 8

We all started feeling very excited and a little emotional knowing that in just 3-4 hours we will have completed the Kokoda Trek.

The day started across multiple river crossing along Uaule Creek. I did not come prepared with good sandals, only slides. I decided to use strapping tape to tape the slides on top of feet much to the amusement of other trekkers.

After the river crossings it was all up hill to Imita Ridge. From here, it was down again on a trail once known as the Golden Staircase, built by Australian troops down the war. Once we reached Goldie River it was then for the final climb to Owers Corner with the finish line at the top.

We had now officially completed the Kokoda Trail! We meet with our driver and transfer back to Port Moresby, stopping en route to visit Bomana War Cemetery, where 3,600 Australian Soldiers were laid to rest.

Once we were back to the hotel it was time to call our families. I had the best shower I’ve ever had.

Later that night we met for dinner and said our final good byes to our porters and guides. They presented us with wood carvings that they worked on during the trek. A meaningful end to an unforgettable experience.

On the 11th of July, Friday, the COVA Victoria team volunteered at Fareshare’s Abbotsford kitchen.

Fareshare is a charity that has been providing free, nutritious meals to Australians in need since 2001. Operating the country’s largest charity kitchens in Melbourne and Brisbane, Fareshare work with chefs and volunteers to transform rescued, donated, and homegrown ingredients to millions of wholesome meals each year.

Our team:

• Packed 827 x 400g of single-serve meals of chicken and roast potatoes
• Prepped 80KG of beef stir fry that will go towards a further 850 meals
• Contributed to cleaning and resetting the kitchen
• Total impact of 1,677 meals that are already out on the road to those in need.

Working alongside Australian Venue Co., Red Design Group, COVA supported the delivery of this landmark hospitality project with tailored building services solutions that meet both the operational needs and unique design ambitions of the venue.

This project is a strong example of our capability in delivering refurbishments within live urban environments, particularly hospitality and entertainment settings.

Caleb’s career at COVA began straight out of university, where had lead a fast-paced motorsport design team. He found that consulting offered a similar pace and intensity which resonated immediately with him.

From day one, Caleb treated the business as if it were his own, driven by a strong desire to constantly improve himself, his team, and the systems around him. His enthusiasm for collaboration and team culture helped pave the way from leading the Hobart office to his current role as Vietnam Country Lead.

Early Motivation and Career Milestones

His connection to COVA began during a university placement. While the fast-moving, varied nature of the work was appealing, it was ultimately the people who made the biggest impression. Now with six years in the industry, Caleb marks his promotion to Team Leader in Hobart as a key milestone. It shifted his mindset and expanded his leadership responsibilities.

Current Role at COVA

As Vietnam Country Lead, Caleb manages the MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Hydraulics) team across Cambodia and Vietnam. He leads the Vietnam office, secures new work locally and facilitates coordination between Asian and Australian teams. He thrives in the challenges of building a team and business from the ground up, embracing the responsibility and excitement of establishing a strong local presence.

Q&A with Caleb How does your role contribute to the growth and success at COVA?

“My role is to establish a sizable and successful Vietnam tea. Vietnam presents exciting opportunities, both with its resurging market and the capability of its engineers. Our growing MEP team will provide valuable support to our Australian counterparts while also expanding our capabilities in Asia, adding strong MEP to our PM and QA service offerings. The goal is to make our Vietnam office strong enough that most of our projects are local to Ho Chi Minh City.”

What do you believe sets COVA apart in delivering value to clients?

“We’re proactive in educating and guiding our clients to their ideal outcome. We are approachable, ‘user-friendly’, and we treat every client’s budget as if it were our own.”

Can you share a project you’re particularly proud of?

Definitely, the University of Tasmania, Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (UTAS IMAS) aquaculture research facility will remain a memorable project for a long time. From an Engineering perspective, I expect it will remain the most service-dense and engineering-intensive project I will ever do. For the design phase, it had our team firing on all cylinders, flexing our engineering, project coordination, 3D coordination capability and delivering full Tender documents.

If you could describe COVA in three words, what would they be?

Authenticity. Collaboration. Pub Lunch.

Looking ahead Caleb is most excited about the autonomy his role provides, the chance to carefully build a team, confidently promote their capabilities, and deliver meaningful projects across Vietnam. He sees his work as more than just engineering; it’s about building a sustainable business that reflects COVA’s values in a new market.

Life outside of work

Away from the office, Caleb enjoys short hikes, reading, going to the gym, and playing board games with friends. A tech enthusiast at heart, he loves spending time tinkering with computers, sound systems, games and cinema setups.

“This project isn’t just about construction,” Visoth shares. “It’s about contributing to Cambodia’s healthcare sector., Being part of a project that will help locals receive life-saving heart treatment is deeply rewarding.”

The Siem Reap Heart Centre is a specialised hospital designed to treat heart disease, equipped with advanced technology like a modern Cathlab and precision-designed procedure rooms. For Visoth, this means the project demands more than standard construction expertise; it calls for a deep understanding of technical requirements, high-quality materials, and strict compliance with health infrastructure standards.

“Hospital construction is a different level,” he explains. “It requires experienced engineers and leaders to make sure everything meets the highest specifications”

Like many large-scale infrastructure projects, the Heart Centre build has faced its share of complexities. One of the biggest challenges was bridging gaps between diverse stakeholders, such as contractors, suppliers and consultants, each bringing their work styles and expectations to the table..

” The key was clarity and communication. I made it a point to constantly clarify the purpose and scope the project, and to promote collaboration between all teams.” Visoth says. “When everyone is aligned, challenges become opportunities to build stronger partnerships.”

Visoth credits his leadership style to three core values: professionalism, responsibility and accountability. But above all, he believes in teamwork.

“We work as one team, regardless of hierarchy. Our shared goal is to deliver this project to serve the community. That unity is what keep things moving, especially when problems arise.”

Strong relationships are essential on a project of this scale. Visoth emphasises that maintaining open, respectful communication across clients, consultants, and contractors has been a vital part of this project’s momentum.

Since joining COVA, Visoth’s approach to project management has evolved. He’s embraced the Integrated Management Systems (IMS) used across COVA’s projects, which he credits as a key enabler of effective project leadership.

“Working with COVA has taught me that consulting is about more than technical skills; it is about documentation, process, and strategy which are just as critical. IMS has been a game-changer for me.”

Looking ahead, Visoth is excited to continue growing as a project leader and extending his knowledge on a global scale.

“I’ve learned so much from my colleagues. I’m developing not just a project manager, but as a professional ready to take on bigger responsibilities. Thank you COVA!”

The walk provides access to the spectacular landscape of the Tyndall Range on the West Coast of Tasmania.

The walk is being designed to accommodate a maximum capacity of around 9,000 visitors per year.

To keep the experience wild and sustainable, the walk is being limited to daily departures of around 30 people per day in roofed accommodation and 20 per day camping.

The project is required to be developed across a series of stages, incorporating decanting works and strategic project timing, to ensure minimal disruption to the wilderness sites.

Critical COVA team members for this building services project included Tim King (Electrical & Lighting Designer), Phil Raine (Hydraulic Designer) and Sam Lohrey (Mechanical Engineer). We’re excited to consider ourselves a passionate long-term partner with JAWS Architects and Parks Tasmania, supporting green tourism to some of Tasmania’s most picturesque natural wonders.

With Cambodia’s construction sector continuing to grow rapidly, the push toward low-carbon, energy-efficient buildings is more relevant than ever. The workshop offered great insight into how the sector can adapt and where opportunities lie.

Here are some key takeaways:

• 250 buildings are currently undergoing deep-dive energy assessments, with 50 already completed.
• A national baseline is being developed to inform emission assessment tools
• The goal is to train 300 professionals on low-carbon practices over the next 2.5 years.

At COVA, we support this direction and see huge potential in combining technical expertise with smarter, more efficient design approaches. The future of construction in Cambodia is low-carbon, and it starts with conversations like these.

In 2012, my journey began with practical experience gained during my university years, working with a local contractor on reinforcement concrete and Pre-stressed Concrete arrangement and installation on site

Joining COVA in July 2013, I contributed to the AEON Mall One project, a pivotal experience where the training and support of the country director and the project manager enabled me to balance work and university, leading to my graduation in July 2014.

Subsequently, I worked closely with the quantity surveying team, benefiting from their mentorship in commercial aspects and professional stakeholder communication.

What inspired you to pursue a career in COVA Asia?

A strong sense of belonging to the business and open communication inspires me to develop new ideas of growth for myself as well as for COVA Asia.

How long have you been in the industry and what are some key milestones in your career?

Today marked 12 years of work experience with COVA. I am driven by a continuous desire to learn and grow, and I value the knowledge shared by my management team and all stakeholders.

Can you describe your role and key responsibilities at COVA?

I am currently involved in the Advisory services offered by COVA Asia by handling a few tasks of the Technical Due Diligence & Site Analysis for Client’s properties in Southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea, Africa, and some countries in the South Pacific Ocean.

What excites you the most about your role at COVA?

I genuinely enjoy the dynamic nature of my daily tasks, as each day presents new and exciting opportunities for learning and contribution.

How does your role contribute to the growth and success of COVA?

By having a mindset of wanting to learn and grow, this allows me to bring new ideas and new ways of improving processes within the projects I am involved in.

With the team, we worked hard on a humanitarian project in Siem Reap and we are proud to see the construction progress.

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I enjoy cooking, and I love researching how to raise happy and healthy children, especially as a mother of two young ones.

The project supports Hydro Tasmania’s relocation of key operations from 4 Elizabeth Street, enhancing workplace connectivity and improving collaborative spaces. This move marks a strategic step forward for the organisation — and COVA is a proud to have played a central role in its delivery.

Our scope at 2 Elizabeth Street covered comprehensive base building services design, including HVAC plant, ventilation and air conditioning, hydraulic services, data and general power, lighting and fire protection systems.

With works delivered over multiple carefully staged phases, we ensure a seamless transition and minimal disruption to building operations. This included the complex upgrade of the building’s centralised plant - a critical undertaking requiring precise programming and construction staging over 12-16 week period.

Key contributors to this flagship project include Nathan Brailey (Project Manager and Team Lead), Tim King (Electrical and Lighting Designer), Phil Raine (Hydraulic Designer) and Michael Fletcher (Mechanical Designer), among other valued team members.

The survival simulation was a key highlight, energizing participants as they developed essential survival skills. This session emphasized both individual accountability and teamwork, demonstrating the power of personal initiative combined with collective effort. By the end, everyone walked away with valuable survival insights!

The innovation session provided an excellent platform for attendees to share their ideas and perspectives, with many coming prepared with creative contributions.

The final session focused on strategic direction and the latest updates from Asia, encouraging an engaging discussion where participants gained valuable insights and had the opportunity to ask key questions about growth and objectives.

As a Senior Design Manager at COVA, I act as the bridge between clients and the design team, ensuring projects meet expectations and industry standards. My role adapts to each project’s needs, focusing on strategic planning, risk management, and quality assurance. I lead teams, collaborate with consultants, and oversee project delivery - making sure solutions are tailored, on time, and high quality while keeping risks and costs in check.

What excites you most about leading projects in Building & Properties Australia?

Working with a diverse range of clients allows us to deliver a wide array of unique and complex projects. No two projects are ever the same, and while there may be some similarities, each one presents new challenges that keep the work exciting and dynamic. Beyond the projects themselves, it’s the people that make the real difference. Our team supports one another every step of the way, which makes even the most challenging projects that much easier.

What standout projects has your team delivered this year that exemplifies COVA’s values and how did you navigate their challenges with innovative solutions?

One standout project is the University of Tasmania’s IMAS Experimental Aquaculture Facility, including the Antarctic Division Krill Research Labs. This project started in 2021, and it took three years of detailed documentation before reaching the tender stage. This project presented significant challenges, particularly in designing complex water filtration, heating, and cooling systems. For the Antarctic Division, we also developed a specialised sea ice room that replicates the Antarctic conditions, enabling the formation of sea ice for critical research.

Can you share a proud moment or milestone achieved this year?

Successfully delivering the design documentation for the IMAS Experimental Aquaculture Facility was a major achievement. Managing such a large and complex project required constant oversight to ensure every detail met client’s needs and expectations. While it was a challenging process, the team’s dedication and expertise were instrumental in bringing it to completion.

What opportunities are excited about?

I’m excited about our growth in Asia and how we can leverage each other’s resources and knowledge, as well as the opportunity to deliver different types of projects in that region. I think the teams ability to work together across borders is priceless in that it allows both of us to better support our clients both in Australia and further abroad.

Is there anything you’d like to share about last year?

It’s mainly the ongoing support from my team and everyone around me; I can’t achieve much without the people by my side.

Mayor Doyle said the upgraded facility represents an important investment in community health and wellbeing.

The Port Huon Sports and Aquatic Centre is owned and operated by the Huon Valley Council and offers a range of facilities and classes.

The new state ventilation system includes a pool-grade heat recovery package unit designed to reduce both energy use and better manage condensation within the indoor pool area, significantly improving sustainability and indoor air conditions.

On a positive note, project progress is going well: the first primary structure has been successfully erected, and the initial tilt-up panels — forming the impressive Main Mechanical Plant room, as designed by the one and only Paul King - are now in place. Our team is confident that this thoughtfully designed, spacious plant room will accommodate all necessary equipment.

With these new developments in mind, our new projected completion date is the first quarter of 2026. Stay tuned for regular updates as we continue to integrate all essential services and further enhance this project!

The new public school in Tasmania, Brighton High School — where COVA delivered the mechanical and electrical services design — is nearing completion and will be ready to welcome staff and students in Term 1, 2025.

The school consists of 6 buildings for 600 students and 100 staff and caters for special needs. The school includes:

• Tech/Science facilities
• Performing Arts and Visual Arts
• Material Design (woodwork, metalwork, pottery, etc)
• Sports Ground
• Gym
• Staff Building
• Kitchens including a commercial teaching kitchen

COVA were proudly involved in delivering mechanical and electrical services, where we worked closely and diligently with stakeholders to navigating a tight budget, and encourage best-practices services design.

Unlike most schools which rely exclusively on openable windows (which are often left closed over cold months), the school has a heart-recovery ventilation installed. This provides energy efficiency.

For lighting, we focused on finding the right balance - good quality, low glare lighting that works for the spaces and looks great, without overspending. The Key Design Goals for lighting were:

• Functionality: Make sure every area has the right type of lighting for its needs, from classrooms and staff meeting rooms to basketball courts, recording studios, presentation spaces and outdoor areas just to name a few
• Aesthetic Appeal: The lighting should also create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, making the spaces not just functional but enjoyable to be in.
• Energy Efficiency: Use energy-efficient solutions to help reduce long-term costs and keep things sustainable.
• Quality and Durability: Choose lights that are reliable and built to last, especially in high-traffic areas like school.

We are excited to welcome our new team of former ARUP engineers in Cambodia.

They will join our existing engineering capabilities in the country, contributing to local projects and working closely with our team in Australia.

The scope is to construct additional automated racking within the existing warehouse located at the MidWest Logistics Hub, 500 Doherty’s Rd, Truganina VIC 3029.

In general terms the project includes the expansion of the following, as shown below/

• SRS racking (fully automated robot-controlled, high racking)
• QPS installation and platform extension (where the minimal people have their office area)
• iPack Conveyor Installation (Distribution)

Regarding Scope delineation:

• Daifuku will be responsible for the Automation Systems, including modifications to compressed air
• COVA’s scope will include the Wet and Dry Fire Protection and General Lighting and Power Services.

Given the nature of the project, COVA will undertake these works in LoD 300 for all services. COVA has already completed an initial site inspection and project scoping of the existing facility, and in the process of this, identified significant non-compliance with the initial installation, primarily around wet fire life safety systems. COVA are working with the client to have the lessor rectify, at no cost to the client, to ensure compliance and more importantly a safe working environment for all the people working and visiting the premises.

Whilst not part of COVA remit for the project, this is clearly a value add to the client and true to our company value of Quality and Diligence.

Our team spend the day giving the space a big clean and tidy. They transformed the space - inside and out and the residents were over the moon.

Jackie was entered into the Exceptional Woman in Tasmanian Resources category and was selected as a finalist alongside women from companies such as MMG, Cement Australia, Bell Bay Aluminium, Blue Stones Mines and Liberty GFG. Whilst she did not take out the coveted award, Jackie was proud to be a finalist alongside some extraordinary women who are quietly achieving great things in the Tasmanian resources, manufacturing, and energy sectors.

This year’s Women in Resources and Manufacturing Tasmanian awards attracted a record number of entries and over 150 people attended the event.

The event was a wonderful networking opportunity for COVA with Chris and Jackie having discussions with other Tasmanian companies within these sectors.

The day was a great success, and the team was thrilled to have the opportunity to give back to the community through this meaningful cause.

The new building contains several steam sterilisers, washers, dryers, RO plant, air compressors, and chillers, which each perform an important role sterilisation process, either directly or by supporting it.

The design process has required extensive liaison with the Architect and other consultants involved in the project to ensure appropriate coordination of all services, and ensuring compliance with the required standards.

The figure is a general arrangement of the modular CSSD:

• Packed a total of 750 meals - Ensuring that hundreds of people in need receive healthy and delicious food
• Processed 75KG of carrots - Turning fresh produce into nutritious meals
• Labelled 200 packages - Ready for distribution

Our team worked together seamlessly, demonstrating the power of collaboration and community spirit, and we are proud to support FareShare’s vital work.

Free-flow drinks and food were served for 2 hours with music entertainment throughout the event and a raffle of fantastic prizes. It was a successful celebration with over 80 professionals from diverse backgrounds who share similar visions and goals in supporting gender equity and creating a more inclusive world.

We’re excited to consider ourselves a passionate long-term partner to this end, helping make Tasmania the renewable energy battery of the nation, supporting the creation of an energy future that’s clean, reliable and affordable, and supporting green tourism to some of our nations most picturesque natural wonders.

Spanning over 10,900 square feet, the temple, announced in October 2021, is set to be constructed on a 1.26-acre site adjacent to the current stake center for the Kaohshiung Taiwan North Stake. COVA has been actively involved in the project providing services such as cost estimation and pre-construction management during the design development phase. Our commitment extends throughout the construction process, where we will continue to offer quantity surveying and project management services until the project reaches completion.

MMoser Associates takes on the role of the design/builder for this significant project, and together, we are dedicated to contributing to the realisation of the Kaohshiung Taiwan Temple, a project of great significance and meaning.

This project is but 1 of 2 that Liuzzi Property have entrusted COVA to deliver their full suite of services (MEFH) from pre-DA through to completion. In addition, COVA will undertake a Sustainability Management Plan, DtS Glazing & Façade assessment and JV3 report. Regarding project timing, the intention is to lodge the DA this month, with the Child Care centre due for completion in 2024. COVA has a long-standing history of successful Education projects nationally extending from early childhood through to Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary, and we are currently delivering over $50M of Education-related capital works across Australia. We are also currently engaged for similar facilities in Queanbeyan (NSW) and Hobart (TAS) and have recently completed Early Learning Centres in Victoria at Hogans Road (Tarneit), Victoria Parade (Narre Warren) and Oxanda.

Three TERAO representatives based in China and Vietnam, as well as EuroCham and AmCham leaders were invited to share their knowledge, best practices and approaches for both existing and new construction projects to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability goals in the context of Cambodia.

It was interesting to gain insights from TERAO who is an engineering and consulting company, specialising in building sustainability, energy efficiency and transitions as well as environmental impacts of client’s assets.

Cambodia is known to be one of the largest energy consumers in Asia and the benefits of implementing sustainable practices were presented such as energy audits on existing building or carbon reduction calculation basis by rating the carbon usage in different materials for construction and transport, through design retrofitting for future end-users’ well-being, and arising opportunities in new projects by using energy modelling and climate analysis data simulations. It was clear that adoption of sustainability is imminent, particularly in Cambodia which has been lagging behind and needs Government support along with collaboration from the private sector.

As it was one of the first seminars organised by TERAO in Cambodia, the guest list was at full capacity and we are sure they will organise more of these in the future with COVA in attendance.

Roger has worked with COVA in one form or another for 29 of his 37 years of employment - an impressive effort!

Roger has been one of the Industrial team’s guiding lights, and his technical knowledge and experience are second to none. Roger leaves a legacy behind him, including some of COVA’s most significant projects, such as the Marvel Stadium Roof and Esperance Shiploader.

The Hobart office celebrated his retirement with an amazing (and huge) cake made by his wife, Shari, and a few heartfelt speeches. Joined by his family and some long-standing colleagues it was a lovely send-off.

It’s not the last of Roger we’ll see though, after a well-deserved break he will be coming back on a casual basis to keep doing what he does best.

Olderfleet was completed in 2020 and is one of the largest premium-grade buildings to be built in the city for 25 years. The 40-floor, 58,000 sqm building integrates a modern commercial tower with one of Melbourne’s most important pieces of heritage architecture, the Olderfleet buildings. Raising the bar for contemporary workplaces in Australia, the development includes smart technology, leading sustainability, childcare facilities, luxury end-of-trip amenities, a sophisticated cocktail bar, a business lounge, several dining options, and an in-house concierge making Olderfleet a prestigious work address. Olderfleet has been designed to achieve a 6 Star Green Star rating, 5 Star NABERS Energy rating, and 4 Star NABERS Water rating.

The COVA space started with a cold shell, with the fitout considering all the above principles, seeking its influence from our Hobart and Sydney offices.

The office, designed for the Melbourne family, is truly a team result with input from everyone from the moment we found the spot, through to our MEFH engineer design team, to those that gave up their weekends in the run-up to the opening and of course, Gerard McKone who ran this project.

We would like to thank HUNTER MASON for their contributions and brilliant execution to COVA Melbourne’s’ new home.

Our new offices will be a paradigm shift in the way we work, the way we interact, and a space that finally brings us all back together again.

The Sydney team, along with our neighboring office MG Consulting, came together for a delightful morning tea. During the morning tea, the group took the opportunity to learn about the significance of NAIDOC week, its origin, and the new initiatives that COVA is undertaking to support and engage with Indigenous communities. This knowledge-sharing session helped deepen the team’s understanding of NAIDOC week’s importance and its broader cultural context. The Native Bush Tea was a hit & we would like to thank Goanna Hut for the delicious catering.

The Melbourne team looked the part in our new Indigenous-themed high-vis vests. Taking advantage of the new workplace they gathered for a morning tea catered by Mabu Mabu. Mirvac also organised NAIDOC Week events at The Olderfleet building, housing the Melbourne Office. These events included a Yidaki performance in the lobby, informative sessions on native plants with Indigrow, and native bush teas from Kakadu Plum Co. Our team had the privilege of participating and listening to captivating cultural activities.

The Hobart team was in for a treat with a lavish lunch inspired by native cuisine. The incredibly talented young chef Djuker Wills Hart, a Wakka-Wakka, Kuku-yanaji, and Butchula man, prepared an Indigenous-style wallaby couscous. To enhance the experience, Djuker also performed a Welcome to Country Smoke Ceremony, providing a memorable cultural moment for all staff to enjoy.

At the Fremantle Ports Clinker Import Circuit Facility, a traditional Indigenous breakfast was supplied by Gather Foods. Fremantle Ports Authority and RC Construction joined the COVA team for this meaningful gathering where Angus (Gus) McGuire, a Noongar, Whadjuk man, delivered a Welcome to Country, adding a deep cultural significance to the occasion.

The panel focused on addressing mental health in the workplace, specifically highlighting the stigmas men face in their day-to-day lives. The discussion centred around developing the skills to openly discuss mental health and support one another in various aspects of our lives, including our workplaces and communities.

As the construction industry has the highest rate of male suicide, as an industry we need to prioritise mental health & well-being.

As part of our commitment to this worthy cause, our team supported by i2C Architects recently volunteered at a residential dwelling in NSW that provides crisis accommodation for women and children fleeing domestic violence. Our team painted the interior of the facility to make it a more welcoming and comfortable space for its residents.

This was a humbling and rewarding experience for our team, and we are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a meaningful cause. We look forward to continuing our support of Habitat for Humanity and its mission to build a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

The state-of-the-art facility includes a six-lane 25m indoor swimming pool, a program pool, and an aquatic play area, plus a group fitness class area, equipped gym, and an administration area.

COVA were responsible for the design of HVAC and pool heating, Electrical and Hydraulic services. Energy efficiency was a key consideration throughout the services design with indoor pool air handling and pool water heating being two of the largest energy consumers. A PoolPac Plus Air Change unit was selected to undertake both functions which utilises DX heat pump efficiency which results in significant energy savings.

78kw of Solar PV Cells will also be installed to offset the energy consumption of the facility. A negotiated arrangement with Electric Highway also saw the installation of two highspeed electric vehicle chargers with infrastructure installed to support two additional stations as demand for EV charging facilities grows.

COVA were also involved in the design of backwash storage tanks, transfer pipe, and controls which are located 700m away from the main pool. The controls interface with the existing backwash control circuit and allow backwash water to be discharged to tanks and used for firefighting water supplies rather than discharged to traditional sewerage treatment services.

Located in Hobart Tasmania, COVA worked alongside the Department of Health, Xsquared Architects, and Principal Contractor Hansen Yuncken throughout the design and construction phases of the project. Documentation for the project commenced in 2019 following an arson attack on the facility in 2016 with a subsequent attack again decimating the facility mid-construction on Christmas Eve 2021.

COVA were responsible for all Building Engineering Services (Mechanical, Electrical, Hydraulic and Fire). The project included WELL Building Principles which aim to enhance the well-being and comfort of all facility users. These principles really drove the design and selection HVAC and Electrical Services, but flowed throughout all elements of the project.

As a result of the fire engineering, heritage and acoustic requirements, an interesting hybrid HVAC solution was designed including Heat Recovery Ventilation throughout, hydronic floor heating and air-conditioning to the contemporary spaces, and hydronic panel heating to the heritage spaces.

COVA is proud to be part of the team delivering a facility that will provide such vital mental health services to Tasmania.

The team spent the afternoon exploring the temple, lighting incense, and praying to the statue of Buddha, to bring good health, business prosperity, and luck to all our COVA team.

This visit provided COVA Group with a fundamental understanding of the culture that surrounds our place of work and is hugely important to our development both personally and professionally. After a long wait, The Kingdom of Cambodia is hosting the 32nd SEA Games and 12th ASEAN PARA Games, which have brought together 10,890 athletes and officials from 11 countries in Southeast Asia. With 579 events across 36 different sports, this historic sporting event is anticipated with much enthusiasm and excitement. The 32nd SEA Games 2023 kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony that was held on 5th May 2023 at MTN Stadium, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Khmer ancestors and the impressive progress of modern Cambodia. This event holds immense significance for the Cambodian people, who have been eagerly awaiting this momentous occasion for over 50 years. COVA Cambodia takes pride in its role as a Cost Management consultant for The World Bridge Sport Village, which serves as the accommodation facility for all athletes participating in the games.
