COVA Cambodia Cultural Site Visit

COVA Cambodia recently took part in another Cultural Site Visit, this time to Oudong Mountain. Oudong was built in the early 17th century, as a new/temporary capital of Cambodia, after much conflict with both Thailand and Vietnam over many centuries. Home to some 16 stupas, representing several different prominent Cambodian families, Oudong was recently renovated in 2002 to ensure the essence and majesty of the structure was maintained for years to come. After a climb of 509 steps, over 5,000 sculptures of the Buddha are housed, protected, and displayed here for visitors to pray to and find peace.

Also interestingly, Ramathipadey I, who reigned from 1614-1659, was the first and only king of Cambodia to convert to Islam (Sunni) which is why the surrounding area in Kandal Province is home to many Mosques and the Cham people who populate it.

These trips are fundamental to COVA in understanding the country in which we operate, how close to the culture everyday Cambodian people are, and how significant Angkorian history is to the entire, wider, history of Southeast Asia.

COVA Cambodia will continue these trips as part of our desire to learn more and act #StrongerTogether with the people and place to which Cambodia is their home.
